The way I pick my wine flights is similar to how I pick my beer. If you haven’t read that part of the series yet, check it out here.
The main difference going into the selection is my mood.
With beer, what I’m in the mood for doesn’t matter. I’ll try anything.
Wine? Different story.
There will definitely be times that I’ll taste across the spectrum of selection. Especially if it’s a new-to-me winery that I’m visiting.
My only regret in life is that I did not drink more wine

So what does my mood have to do with my selection?
Well, if I’m not in the mood for anything sweet, reislings are out.
If I’m not in the mood for anything with a buttery note, I won’t include chardonnays.
Knowing your mood will help you eliminate the wines that you don’t want, so that you can pick from a narrower list of wines. And there is always plenty of styles and years of wine to pick from.
Now if that eliminates half to 75% of your options, well I guess you’re only having the reds for that tasting.
Disappointing, but still enjoyable. That just leaves another opportunity for you to return and try the other options when you’re in the mood for them.
As with beer, you can always leave room for something you may not be in the mood for. You never know what you might find.
Let me know in the comments how you pick your wine flights.
In the next part of this series, I’ll cover how to pick a whisky flight.
