Picking a flight of tequila involves two steps for me.
Know the styles of tequila
Go vertical or horizontal
That’s it.
I try not to over complicate it.
Drinking tequila is more about the journey than the destination
Unknown
Maybe when I go to Jalisco, Mexico and truly taste tequila I’ll add more steps.
Let’s break it down.
Know the styles of tequila
The three main styles of tequila that most people know about are blanco, repasdo and añejo in order of smoothness. There are two other styles in the mix, joven and extra añejo, that get left out.
I’ll go into more details about tequila in a later post.
You also have to know whether the tequila is 100% blue agave or a mixto that contains at least 51% blue agave.
Oh boy does this matter.
The taste can be widely different.
Go vertical or horizontal
What does this mean?
Well since you now know the styles of tequila, to go vertical means to pick one brand and taste all styles in that brand.
To go horizontal means to pick one style and taste a few different brands in that same style.
I personally prefer horizontal so I can appreciate the smoothness and complexity at each level.
Let me know in the comments how you pick your tequila flights.
I hope you’ve enjoyed the series for how I pick flights for beer, wine, whisky and tequila.
